Today we are delighted to introduce our two new Head Girls Maddy and Muznah who we know will do an outstanding job leading the Sixth Form team. Here we find out a little more about them...
When did you join Redmaids’ High School?
Maddy: I joined Redmaids’ High in Year 10, September 2020. It was just after lockdown and my year group was based in temporary classrooms, so I didn’t really have the usual induction into the school, but settled in pretty quickly nonetheless!
Muznah: I joined in September 2022 so not long ago at all!
What subjects are your studying in Sixth Form?
Maddy: I am studying English Literature and History (just like Muznah!) as well as German, and I’m doing an EPQ too.
Muznah: I am currently studying English Literature, Classical Civilisations and History, as well as Creative Writing as an AFA (Apprentice of Fine Arts).
What do you love most about Redmaids’ High?
Maddy: I love how the school advocates for a love and passion for all knowledge, whether that be STEM subjects, music or computer science, to name a few. At Redmaids’ High there is no judgement if you love to learn, or if you’re a bit ‘nerdy’ (!), which can often be a problem in education: here the teachers and environment make me extremely excited to learn!
Muznah: It is certainly the sense of family and community that I love the most about Redmaids’ High. The love and warmth with which I was received into the Sixth Form is impossible not to reciprocate.
What inspired you to go for the position of Head Girl?
Maddy: The past two sets of Head Girls, Phoebe and Tamsyn, and Emma and Poppy, have been great role models for me, and inspired me to carry on their work! As well as this, in the two and a half years I’ve been at the school, I have got involved with so much, and in doing so have become a figure that anyone can talk to, have a laugh with, or ask for advice, and I wanted to be this figure on a wider scale as well.
Muznah: I have always been driven to aim high, and the position of Head Girl appealed to me because it was clearly a role that was highly valued and impactful within the school. I viewed this as my opportunity to give back to the school that had welcomed me so warmly, and I can’t wait to do so.
What changes would you like to bring to the school as part of the Head Girls team?
Maddy: I would definitely like to see an equal celebration of all subjects. While I hugely support the promotion of STEM subjects at our school, I don’t want this to take away from the importance of the arts and humanities, so to ensure that all students thrive in their chosen subject, Muznah and I hope to create student-led societies, as a way of promoting all subjects in a fun and exciting way!
Muznah: One main change that I aim to bring to the school is some diversification of the events (religious, cultural etc) that we recognise and celebrate. It is important to me that people of different religious cultures and backgrounds feel celebrated and acknowledged, as this will contribute greatly to school feeling more like home. I believe the school already does a great job at this, but of course there is no limit to diversity.
What are you most looking forward to throughout your year as a Head Girl?
Maddy: I have to be honest and say I’m definitely looking forward to wearing the traditional dress on Founder’s Day! But I’m also really looking forward to working with Muznah and our Head Mr Dwyer to make little changes that will help Redmaids’ High students feel even more excited about coming to school. I am also very much looking forward (and equally very scared) to perform our end-of-term raps in assembly!
Muznah: So many things! Head Girl Reports and Founder’s Day are particularly exciting... and nerve-wracking! Most of all I’m looking forward to chairing the school council and working with representatives from all the year groups in order to make the school experience even better for everyone.
Finally, can you share with us what you think will be the best thing about working alongside each other as part of the school’s Head Girls team?
Maddy: I am definitely excited to be working alongside Muznah, as we have the same values and passions, and already work well as a team! Muznah is super creative and has a wonderful mind, so I know that she will always see things with a fresh and exciting perspective. She is also kind and understanding, so if ever things got a bit too much, I know I could really count on her as a friend as well as part of the Head Girl team.
Muznah: Maddy is in my English class however it doesn’t take being in lessons with her to be able to tell that she is an intelligent, confident woman who, whilst having brilliant ideas of her own, is also attentive and considerate. Our Wednesday meetings with Mr Dwyer, writing in the Head Girl book, making fools of ourselves in front of the school for our Report – I can’t think of a better person to share this experience with, and I’m unable to list just one ‘best thing’ about working alongside Maddy. I’m sure we’ll make it through thick and thin!
