Student art and design on public display

Student art and design on public display

Hundreds of people viewed our students’ art and design work last weekend as a result of a successful partnership with the BS9 Arts Trail.

We were delighted to host 12 external artists at school, at the same time as showcasing GCSE, A Level and International Baccalaureate Diploma work from our own Art, and Design & Technology students.

Parents, students, alumnae and members of the general public enjoyed our exhibition of paintings, sculptures, photographic images and textiles.

Steph Hill, Head of Technology, said: “This year we have seen a more diverse range of skills and techniques with students experimenting with fabric manipulation, free-machine embroidery, heat-transfer inks, soluble fabric – even plastics.  The depth of work, from sketchbook to final piece, is exceptional and many visitors to the exhibition commented on the creativity, imagination and outstanding ability of our textile students.”

“The girls here are really ambitious”, added Head of Art, Beth Sims, “and work with a range of different materials.”

“It was wonderful to get so much positive feedback from our visitors – many of whom were astounded at the quality of work.”

Beth was also interviewed on BBC radio on the morning of the exhibition. She explained how she develops the girls’ creative talents by encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone and make their work really personal so that it reflects themes they are particularly interested in.

Jude Peace, one of our art technicians, was also interviewed and talked about the art she herself produces as well as the expertise she brings to her role.

You can hear the full interview, which provides an interesting insight into the work of the Art Department, here (it starts at 13 mins): https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p07b2hxq
