Headteacher's blog: A Vous La France!

Parlez vous Français? Our Junior School Open Morning in November is inspired by all things French. We learn French throughout Key Stage 2 with an emphasis on fun and giving the girls a solid foundation in language acquisition. We are fortunate that Sixth Formers run language clubs in the Summer Term for our Juniors to experience additional languages and when they transfer into the Senior School, they have the option to learn further languages. Some of our girls are bilingual or have experience of speaking more than one language between school and home. What an asset this is!

The benefits of language learning are many: memorising vocabulary, listening and practising pronunciation, learning parts of speech and grammar, making links between other languages, including English and gaining confidence to speak in class are just a few.  Proven to improve memory and brain function, learning a language strengthens the area of the brain responsible for memory, speech and sensory perception. The brain’s capacity for learning languages is greatest before the age of 8 so never underestimate a 7 year old!

However, learning French, or any language, is not just about the spoken word but is also about exploring the traditions and culture of the country. The French curriculum here includes a study of weather across France where the girls are invited to be weather presenters, the local High Street shops are explored and of course, French fashion is a must! Year 6 debate, in French, their opinions on school uniform. Learning about another culture promotes curiosity and a greater understanding of other people. It encourages an improved appreciation of how people live and promotes positive communication between each other.

On Saturday 4 November we will have a range of activities inspired by France and the French. Will you be trying Cordon Bleu at RHJS, creating an impressionist styled Monet of your own, building an Eiffel Tower or making a hot air balloon following the success of the Montgolfier brothers? I look forward to seeing you there!

A bientôt!
