A round up of Redmaids' High charitable activities over 2022/23

Charity ImageWe've been really struck by the engagement we've seen from the Senior School and Sixth Form community this past academic year. It's clear that being conscious, generous, and charitable is something that everyone here values highly, and this is reflective in the hard work all the girls and staff have put in to running events and raising money for important and worthwhile causes. Here are some highlights of the fund raising activities and charities we've supported over the last academic year.

Autumn Term 2022

  • Students from Years 8, 9 and 12 had three cake sales to raise money for Dogs Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Ranch (a treasured adventure playground for families in Southmead).
  • Junior Almoners led their forms in collecting tins, toiletries and long-life food for the Bristol North West Food Bank. We were so impressed to see so many donations, and the general awareness the school had surrounding the cost of living crisis hitting the UK at the time.
  • A home clothes day was held at the end of the half term to raise money for National Energy Action (NEA). This charity is vital in providing energy saving advice and campaigning to raise the issue on the government's agenda.
  • We held a Year 7 and 8 Redmaids' High and QEH disco in Redland Hall after half term. Funds raised from tickets and sweets went to the Bujagali Trust
  • Charity week raised money for a huge range of causes thanks to House Captains, the Junior Almoners and teachers who helped make the week happen and so willingly gave up their time. Events that took place were teacher talent show in aid of the British Red Cross' Ukraine Appeal, Staff vs Student karaoke raised money for Bristol-based Off The Record, biscuit decorating went towards Diabetes UK, Pie the Teacher for The Grand Appeal and additionally across the whole week, poppies were sold for the Royal British Legion
  • The term ended with a lot of Christmas spirit! Our Christmas Jumper day raised money for Caring at Christmas, while the Christmas Fete, featuring stalls by the Junior Almoners, the Bold Voices Sixth Form team and Year 8 Enterprise/PSHE groups was a huge success. Stalls sold snow globes, Christmas cards, jewellery and lots of cake for a wide range of charities including WWF, the Halo Project and Caring at Christmas. From the Christmas fete alone over £880 was raised!

Spring Term 2023

  • A concert collection, Sixth Form bake sale and a home clothes day was held to fundraise for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a charity which coordinates 15 UK member charities in times of disaster and we wanted to support those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
  • One of our Year 11's ran The Date Project and raised £660 for five amazing causes.
  • The Year 7 Disco with QEH raised funds for The Bujagali Trust and Nkuringo Education and Community Support (NECS)
  • We ran a Ceilidh (similar to a barn dance) in aid of Charity:Water, a charity which aims to eliminate the walk for water, the responsibility for which, in Sub-Saharan Africa, is taken on 7 times out of 10 by women, meaning less time in education for girls.
  • We launched the second half of the Spring Term with Charity Week, which saw events run by the Junior Almoners in years 7-12. Apart from the cake sale for WWF, the events raised money for The Bujagali Trust and Nkuringo Education and Community Support (NECS), two charities working with schools in Uganda. Events that took place were Year 7's Mile of Pennies!, Year 8's Teacher vs Student Quiz, Year 9's ran an amazing cookie decorating event and Year 12's Just Dance competition.
  • Staff vs Student Netball match where they also ran a cake sale to raise money for Women in Sport. This charity helps influence, schools, local councils and national government whilst campaigning to ensure sport is open to all women and girls.
  • As a school, we collected items to make 'Welcome Packs' for Aid Box Community. These donations have a massive impact on making someone's journey as a refugee or asylum seeker a little less challenging, so the Sixth Form Almoners who were in charge encouraged everyone to get involved.
  • Cakes/biscuits sale to raise money for Caring in Bristol, who work in imaginative and creative ways with people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

In total over £12,000 was raised for the 2022-2023 academic year, which is a phenomenal achievement and we are so proud of everyone who participated.
